HSP3U - Introduction to Social Sciences

ROM TRIP - $35       KINDNESS DAY - Idea's needed for September 2017!!!

Welcome to Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology.

Get curious, make observations, ask questions and figure out why humans act they way they do.

Success in this course will guarantee that you understand how everyone, society and our culture works (Seriously, you will never have to stare incredulously a friend, parent, or costudent as they act irrationally ever again! YOU WILL KNOW WHY!.) Stay tuned to figure out: how to deal with awkward social situations, manipulate others, make people really uncomfortable, start trends, stop trends, lie convincingly, fool your unreasonable teacher, and maybe even find love (in the brain).

Taking this course is like cheating at social interactions!

Assessments:

According to the Journal of Emergency Medicine, a 47-year-old man burned a HOLE in his esophagus after ingesting "ghost pepper puree" on top of a burger in a food eating contest.

For those who don't know, the ghost pepper is extremely dangerous due to its rating on the Scoville scale, a system which measures the intensity of peppers. Let's just say these bad boys are incredibly HOT — an average jalapeño is just 3,500 units; the ghost pepper rates more than a MILLON units!

Video: Watch This Man Eat A Hot Chili Pepper And Then Try To Sing!

Shortly after the poor guy ate the puree, he started "violently retching and vomiting" even after gulping down six glasses of large water. The man was then rushed to the hospital after the pain continued to increase.

Luckily, medical professionals were able to determine he was suffering from Boerhaave syndrome AKA spontaneous esophageal rupture. The tear was a whopping 2.5 cm, which is pretty significant when you consider it occurred in the esophagus.

Academic Honesty

Honesty is one of the keys to personal success; it demonstrates respect for self and others and promotes a positive school atmosphere. Honesty is both a virtue and an expectation of our society and school environment. Our school’s academic policies are designed on the premise of “academic honesty.”

Anthropology is the study of humans, past and present. This field is all encompassing and seeks to understand human culture across all of human history. A central concern of anthropologists is the application of knowledge to the solution of human problems. For a passing reference to a website in text, the URL is sufficient; no reference list entry is needed.

Gussie Fink-Nottle has set up a discussion forum for newt fanciers (http://gfnnfg.livejournal.com/).

However, when you are citing a particular document or piece of information from a website, include both a reference list entry and an in-text citation. The key to creating the reference list entry is to determine the type of content on the web page. Basically, provide the following four pieces of information:

Author, A. (date). Title of document [Format description]. Retrieved from http://xxxxxxxxx

The in-text citation includes the author and date (Author, date), as with any other APA Style citation.

PSYCHODYNAMIC STATIONS (rotate through each of the following 4 stations ~17  min each)

STATION 1--> Brain games:
Visit the Brain Games website, by National Geographic.
  • Try as many games possible
  • Record each one you try, and describe what the game was testing
  • For each, describe, how it relates to the study of psychology?

*HAND IN: YOUR LIST OF GAMES PLAYED & PSYCHOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION OF EACH

STATION 2 --> Personality Quizzes:
  • Complete A/B Type test and the True Colours Personality test.
  • Read up on what your results mean and write 3-4 sentences describing whether or not you feel your results suit you.
  • Explain briefly how an understanding your personality can help you understand your own thoughts and actions?

* HAND IN: YOUR 3-4 SENTENCES COMMENTING ON YOUR PERSONALITY TEST RESULTS

STATION 3 --> Dream interpretation:
  • Describe briefly a dream you have had.
  • In a one well-written paragraph reflect on what you think it meant/why you had it.
  • Consider the images, symbols and themes from it. Using the dream interpretation books, look up proposed interpretations of your dream symbols and themes.

* HAND IN: YOUR 1-PARAGRAPH DREAM REFLECTION

STATION 4 --> Defence mechanisms:
  • Review the types of defence mechanisms identified on your yellow handout sheet
  • Consider when you, or people you have known, have used some of these mechanisms to "cope" with a situation or problem
  • Write 2-3 short case studies illustrating at least two of these defence mechanisms being utilized.
  • See example below...
Gillian has just found out her mother has cancer. She doesn’t want to accept this diagnosis so she tells her mother to get a second opinion (denial). Her mom refuses to do this and Gillian becomes angry, and as she storms out of the room, she punches her brother in the arm, who is standing beside her mom (displacement).
